Sell the automated version before you build it

A playbook: do a job for businesses by hand as a service, such as booking sales meetings. Then pitch those buyers software that does the same job and get commitments before you build it.

The hard part: doing the work by hand for every client while the software is still being built, which can mean a huge number of calls.

Who pays

Businesses pay a monthly fee for a result, such as more sales meetings, delivered by hand at first and later by software. fin465 says prospects named prices of $500/mo, $1,000/mo, and some $4-5k/mo. The poster also says Origami booked over $50k/month in revenue in its first 2 months before a product existed. These are the poster's own claims.

How to build it

  1. Pick a job businesses already pay for

Choose a result businesses already spend money on, like finding new customers or booking sales meetings. Talk to around 20 potential buyers before building anything.

  2. Do the job by hand first

Deliver the work as a service using spreadsheets or Airtable and Claude, so you learn exactly what buyers value.

  3. Ask buyers what they would pay

Pitch the automated version and ask 'How much would you pay to have this?' Write down every answer.

  4. Tie your price to the result

Offer terms like 'You don't pay until we hit X' or 'Free if it doesn't work' so saying yes feels safe for a new buyer.

  5. Deliver by hand while you build

When clients start before the software is ready, keep doing the work yourself, such as sending a weekly list of the best leads. Bill monthly through Stripe.

  6. Automate one step at a time

Use Claude Code to turn the most repeated manual step into software first, then move to the next one.

fin465 says their AI startup Origami scaled to $50k/month before building a product, which is the poster's own claim. They first ran an agency booking sales meetings by hand, then pitched businesses on software that finds customers for them and heard answers of $500/mo, $1,000/mo, and some $4-5k/mo. When clients started and there was no product, the poster says they did the job by hand, building spreadsheets of the best leads for each client.
