Repaint faded signs for local businesses
Find local businesses with faded or worn-out signs, show each owner a picture of what their sign could look like restored, and get paid to restore or hand-paint it. AI helps you build the list of signs and make the before-and-after pictures.
The hard part: you need real sign painting skill, and you have to walk into businesses cold and pitch the owners face to face.
Who pays
Local business owners pay you to restore or hand-paint their sign, with 50% paid up front as a deposit. You can also offer an ongoing maintenance contract. mhp_guy says the sign painter in his posts made $4,000 in month one at 90% profit, passed $16K in a single month five months in, and signed his first client to a 3-year maintenance contract. These figures are the poster's own claims.
How to build it
List faded signs near you
Use an AI tool along with Google Maps Street View, or just drive around town, to list every faded or worn sign within about 10 miles. Track each business, its address, and the state of its sign in Airtable.
Photograph each sign
Visit each business on your list and take a clear, straight-on photo of the sign as it looks now.
Mock up the restored version
Upload the photo to ChatGPT and ask it to make an image of the same sign with fresh paint and crisp lettering. Put the before and after side by side on your phone or a printed sheet.
Show owners the before and after
Walk in, ask for the owner, and show them the side-by-side picture. Quote the restoration, and offer a maintenance plan that keeps the sign looking good over the next few years.
Take a 50% deposit
Collect half the price before you start, either on the spot or with a Stripe Payment Link sent to the owner's phone. Collect the rest when the work is done.
Post finished work and tag businesses
Post a before-and-after photo of every finished sign on social media and tag the business. Nearby owners see the work, and each post helps you land the next job.

mhp_guy writes that a 59-year-old who lost a six-figure corporate sales job started restoring and hand-painting old business signs on Cape Cod, and it cost him under $100 to start because he already owned the tools. The poster says he did $4,000 in month one at 90% profit and passed $16K in a single month five months in. These figures are the poster's own claim.

The poster says the sign painter used AI to find hundreds of faded, rundown business signs within 10 miles of his house in under 2 hours, and that his very first client signed a 3-year maintenance contract.

mhp_guy lays out how to copy it in 5 steps: use AI or a drive around town to list every faded sign near you, snap a photo and mock up the restored version, walk in and show the owner the before and after, take a 50% deposit up front, and post every finished sign and tag the business.
