Grow your app with one creator on profit share

Instead of paying many video creators for one-off posts, find one creator whose life and audience fit your app. Pay them a fixed monthly fee plus a share of profits (or a stake in the business) to make a few story-driven videos each month.

The hard part: finding a creator whose audience really matches your app and building enough of a relationship that they commit for the long term.

Who pays

Your app's subscribers pay you, and the creator's videos bring in new subscribers. The creator earns a fixed monthly retainer plus a percentage of profits, so they gain when the app grows. starter_story reports that one expense tracker went from about $300 a month to $35,000 a month with this setup, which is the founder's own account. The size of the retainer and the profit share are yours to set.

How to build it

  1. List creators who fit your app

Search TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube for creators whose daily life and audience match what your app does. Track names, audience, and recent videos in an Airtable base.

  2. Engage with their content first

Spend a few weeks watching and leaving real comments on your top picks' videos. You want them to recognize your name before you pitch.

  3. Pitch with one specific video

Mention a specific video of theirs in your first message and explain why your app fits their audience. Claude can help you draft and tighten the message, but keep it personal.

  4. Offer a retainer plus profit share

Say early that you will pay. Offer a fixed monthly fee plus a percentage of profits, or a stake in the business, and put the terms in a short written agreement.

  5. Agree on a few videos monthly

Plan a small number of story-driven videos each month instead of daily posts. Start with a simple walkthrough of the app.

  6. Reuse the winning videos as ads

Track which videos bring in subscribers, using your app's analytics or RevenueCat. With the creator's permission, run the best ones as paid ads on Meta or TikTok.

starter_story reports that Flo, a solo developer, spent 18 months getting the expense app MonAI to about $300/month. Then Flo struck a deal with a content creator for a fixed monthly retainer plus a percentage of profits, after a revenue share alone did not scale. The post says they post only 3 videos a month and the app now makes $35,000/month, which are the founder's own figures.

starter_story reports that Lino, the founder of the ab-scanning app AbMaxx, spent thousands early on scattered UGC deals (paid videos from everyday creators). Lino then partnered with one big fitness influencer for equity, so ads were almost free. The post says the app is at about $55K/mo with 3,000+ paying subscribers, which are the founder's own figures.
