Sell custom pet portraits made from owners' photos

Pet owners upload a photo of their pet and order it as a portrait poster, canvas or framed print, often as a gift. The store runs on Shopify and Etsy, and a print-on-demand supplier prints and ships each order.

The hard part: getting steady sales outside the November and December gift season once paid ads stop bringing in buyers.

Who pays

Customers pay per order for a printed portrait, often as a gift for a birthday, a new puppy or a pet that has died. One poster reports that a store called Printer Pet passed $1,000,000 in revenue in its first 10 months using hand-drawn artists; that figure comes from the founder via the poster. Another account reports a single Etsy listing for a $26.25 mini watercolor pet portrait selling about 56 times a month. Using AI artwork instead of hired artists is not covered by these sources, so pricing for an AI version is a suggestion.

How to build it

  1. Set up a Shopify store

Open a Shopify store and connect a print-on-demand supplier such as Printful or Printify for posters, canvases, and framed prints.

  2. Let customers upload a photo

Add a photo upload field to each product page using a Shopify upload app, so customers send their pet's picture with the order.

  3. Create portraits in one style

Use ChatGPT's image tool to turn each photo into a portrait in a consistent house style. Check every portrait against the original photo before printing.

  4. Send finished art to print

Upload the final portrait to the print supplier, which prints the order and ships it straight to the customer.

  5. List the products on Etsy

Use Canva to make product mockups and list the same items on Etsy, where gift buyers already search.

  6. Plan for the gift season

Prepare listings and stock up on mockups before November and December, when most gift orders come in.

mhp_guy, describing a podcast interview, says the founder of Printer Pet built the store in a weekend with Shopify, Canva and a print-on-demand supplier, launched in November 2019 and made $1,000 in the first month. According to the poster, after the products were listed on Etsy the store passed $1,000,000 in revenue by month 10, with 80 remote artists and margins of 60-70%, and 65-70% of revenue comes in November and December. These are the founder's figures as reported by the poster, who also says sales have since slowed.
