Buy a small Shopify app and add one AI feature
Buy a small Shopify app that already has paying store owners, find the one problem those stores struggle with most, and add an AI feature that fixes it. Store owners keep paying the app's monthly fee, and more of them sign up.
The hard part: finding an app with real paying merchants at a fair price, and spotting the one problem that, once fixed, changes how much they use it.
Who pays
Shopify store owners pay a monthly subscription for the app, so you start with paying customers on day one and grow revenue by solving their biggest problem. dealalertai says they bought a struggling Shopify app for $52K, added AI visual size matching to tackle 67% cart abandonment, and grew it from $2,300 to $4,100 MRR in 60 days. These figures are the poster's own claim.
How to build it
Browse small apps for sale
Look at marketplaces such as Acquire.com and Flippa for small Shopify apps with steady paying merchants and room to improve.
Read the app's reviews and data
Read its Shopify App Store reviews and support emails, and ask the seller for usage numbers, to find the one problem merchants mention most.
Buy and take over the app
Complete the purchase and move the code, hosting, and app listing into your own accounts, for example hosting on Vercel.
Build one AI feature
Use Claude Code to add a single AI feature that fixes that top problem, such as the poster's visual size matching for shoppers who abandon carts.
Tell merchants about the change
Update the Shopify App Store listing and email current merchants to explain the new feature and how it helps their store.
